Packing Light: What shoes should you take on holiday?

While there are a huge number of tricks for packing up clothing into a small travel bag, shoes really cannot be scrunched up, rolled, or stuffed into things, making them pretty cumbersome when packing light.

Deciding what shoes to pack for a holiday is probably the hardest part. You do not want to take too many and leave no room in your bag for souvenirs, but also do not want to end up forgetting a pair and being uncomfortable for your whole vacation. While men have few choices of shoes (sandals, trainers, smart boots), women’s shoes are vast and varied in style, purpose, and comfort. When it comes to packing light, it can be a minefield. So here is the simplest list of shoes you should take.

Smart shoes or heels

If you enjoy dressing up for a romantic evening meal or need something a little more glamorous than a pair of flip flops, packing a ‘just in case’ pair of smart shoes or heels is a good idea. You do not want to be heading to a nice restaurant, dressed to the nines wearing your hiking boots…

Trainers

Trainers are an obvious choice for anyone planning to do a lot of walking. One traveler tip is to ditch the hiking boots unless you are planning a few big wild walks. A lot of tourist attractions that require sturdy footwear offer a rental service – meaning you do not have to miss out or fill your suitcase with big clunky footwear.

Trainers on the other hand can be worn to the airport or on your travels, so that is one less thing to have to pack.

Flip flops

If you are heading to the coast, flip-flops are a no-brainer. Perfect for nipping down to the beach or relaxing by the pool. They are super lightweight and can be stacked within themselves for easy packing. A pair of easy to put-on shoes is also ideal for campsites or caravans where you might need to nip to shared facilities.

Sandals

Although flip flops are great for short distances, they are a little too flimsy for all-day wear. And that is where a good pair of sandals come in. Wearing trainers throughout a sunny holiday can leave your feet feeling hot and heavy. Sandals give your feet a break and keep you cool throughout the day. A good strong pair of sandals could even be used for hikes or exploring a new city. They are also a great alternative for people who cannot get along with flip-flops.

Flats

Between the stuffiness of trainers and the ease of flip flops is a middleman: a nice pair of flats. These are great for putting on for a walk around town or when traveling long distances. Although they are not essential, flats can be a nice choice for those that want to look a little less ready for an exhibition and are more partial to a relaxing city break.

So, by wearing trainers to the airport, and packing some sandals, smart shoes, and something easy to slip on, you will be ready for whatever the day brings.
